Building an In-law Suites Is

While some would call it a 970 square foot room addition that will help a family with "multi-generational living," others, especially when considering home remodeling ideas, would simply call it a luxury "in-law suite" that will someday become the first floor master suite.

Why Build an In-Law Suite?

Like many home improvements, Towne Craft Builders and this Southern Maryland homeowner worked together to add a Butler Pantry to the rear of the existing home that not only expands the existing dining room, but acts as a bridge between the new master in-law suite addition and the existing home.

In the same fashion, the viewing area from the existing breakfast room was improved by removing some of the existing windows and moving them to the laundry room. New, taller windows were installed in the breakfast room, expanding the views of the backyard.

Despite winter weather challenges and major holiday periods, the expansion of the ground floor and the corresponding in-law suite construction was completed in just five months.

Stu Garlington Reflects on this In-law Suite Addition Remodel

"Working with a client at this level requires more attention to detail and interaction with the client.

As you can see, we first drew a minimalistic floor plan of the existing house including the 2nd floor so we could create a 3D Model. Then we went to work on the room addition. There were three to four versions with corresponding meetings with the client.

Each meeting helped narrow down their vision and our interpretation with more and more detail being discussed and added until there was consensus.

The client was very concerned that the room addition didn’t look like an obvious ‘addition.’ They wanted the original structure and room addition to blend together as if they were built at the same time.

The client and I agree we accomplished that goal and believe you will too when you view the before and after photos."
